I have found another free map source - NASA World Wind (http://worldwind.arc.nasa.gov/). A program has to be installed (World Wind 1.3) and then you can view and save screen shot of satellite images all over the world. You can choose among many satellite sources. The satellite images are not as good as thoose in Google Earth, but you can choose topographic maps all over USA with really good resolution.
I have not tried to calibrate and use those because I don't live in the USA. Maybe someone can and report the result here?
If someone is planning to travel to the moon and bring the GPS, you can get satellite images of the moon too
