Questions and problems

I am using Pathaway EX on an ipod touch 2G. I would appreciate some guidance on how to maximize battery life. Specifically, I would like to know more about the "keep backlight on" setting and the "run in background" setting. I don't find any ipod option that controls the backlight on/off (other than a permanent brightness control), so what does the Pathaway backlight setting do? Likewise, can someone explain what "run in background" means? When I am recording a track, the only way I have found to avoid gaps is to keep Pathaway onscreen and to prevent auto-lock. If I bring another app to the screen, or allow the device to auto-lock, track recording stops. To obtain a continuous track, I need to keep the Pathaway app onscreen and the ipod unlocked. Running this way, the screen never dims and battrey life is really poor. Am I missing something?
