FIXED: PathAway Map Manager colour depth problem

Postby PD » Thu Aug 04, 2005 2:48 pm

Hi,

I downloaded PathAway trial and I was trying to import a jpg satellite picture into Map Manager. I have the coordinates of the corners so I did a calibration and everything is ok. Of course, being a 2400 pixel image, the 16 bit colour representation occupies around 8MB of space, and it's not really needed, an 8 bit representation would be fine, so I tried to downsample the colour depth to 8 bit in Map Manager.

The problem arises here - changing from 16 bit to 8 bit basically destroys all detail in the map.

At first I thought it was the dithering algorithm in Map Manager so I used IrfanView (a freeware image viewer) to reduce the colour depth from the original 24 bit in the jpg to 8 bit. The picture was fine, with some dithering but perfect colourwise. I then tried to import it into Map Manager choosing 8 bit colour (since it already had no more than 256 colours, it shouldn't need to change the colours further). I obtained basically the same result - the colours were all changed and the map was unuseable.

Is this expected behaviour, meaning that maps that have more than 256 colours in the original photo will always have to be imported under 16 bit colour even if one can use external programs to sucessfully convert the photos to 8 bit colour ?

Thanks for any help,

PD
