Problem importing KML files

Postby mbrada » Sun Oct 26, 2008 6:38 am

I use WM6 and PA5 Pro. I can't import KML files, saved from google earth. The export from PA5 works fine, but the import does not.

Can anyone tell me if there is a solution?

Hi Brada,

I have no good solution for this but I can reproduce this here. Reason seems to be that GoogleEarth saves all points' coordinates into one line in the kml file. (GoogleEarth 4.3.7284.3916 beta). PathAway saves one coordinate per line. So perhaps it's more an issue to GoogleEarth (but of course PathAway should handle this 'feature').

Another issue seems to be that the export from PathAway as you wrote seems to work perfectly but the reimport of the same file into PathAway results in exchanged latitude/longitude. E.g. N48E10 results in E48N10.
(PathAway Pro 5.00.18 ).

Solution at the moment could be to edit the kml file:
a. exchanging latitude and longitude of each coordinate and
b. inserting a new line after each coordinate.

kml from GoogleEarth:
11.12315,45.960287,533.1 11.123075,45.960313,533.1 ...</coordinates>

'special kml' for Pathaway:

I tried this with a short file with four coordinates and it worked.

KML Import is not implemented yet. It will be completed very soon. I suggest using GPX for now.

Chris and Scott, thank you for the answer!

Scoot, maybe you should change the list of features of the software in the website.
It says that the KML import/export is supported...

Sometimes I convert the KML files to GPX using the utility KML2GPX 1.2 by Derek Rosen (search in Google). Very easy to use in Windows XP and then PW5 imports the GPX files without any problem.
